In two separate cases of old people being duped, Dehradun police have arrested one person from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh while his companion is absconding. Police have also recovered the jewellery the duo stole from the victims and the scooty which was used while committing the crimes.

The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammad Waseem (29) and the absconding accused is Mohammad Amaan. Both are residents of Meerut.

Addressing the media, superintendent of police (city) Shweta Choubey said that the police received two separate complaints on November 3 and 11. In both the cases, the victims were duped by two young men on a scooty. Based on the information provided by the victims, the police started gathering information about the cases with similar modus operandi.

Simultaneously, police also started to verify the status of accused arrested earlier in such cases in Dehradun.

After searching thoroughly, police found a lead. It was found that two men used to come from Meerut to Dehradun every Saturday on their scooty and had earlier stayed at a hotel in an area under the jurisdiction of Kotwali for about seven to eight days.

From there, police recovered the copies of the identification documents of both the suspects. After that, under the supervision of the Vasant Vihar police station in-charge, a police team was established and sent to Meerut for the arresting both the suspects.

During interrogation, accused Waseem said that after leaving studies, he went to Delhi in search of employment. There after reading the newspapers, he decided to earn easy money by duping old people. He told his neighbour Amaan about the idea, who in return, suggested that they target Dehradun as the population consists of a large number of old people.

They, then, used to rent a hotel room, and target old people who are usually alone. They, then, used to dupe them by greeting them under the pretext of their family friend or relative and then used to take their jewellery on the pretext of cleaning or enhancing it.
