The National Fire Service Day was observed at the main fire station, Gandhi Road, Dehradun to pay homage to firemen who died while performing duty. The Fire Safety Week that started on Tuesday would continue till April 20 to raise fire safety awareness.
Dehradun DIG/SSP Pushpak Jyoti, deputy director CS Jeena, chief fire service officer SK Sharma, fire service officer Shiv Prasad Mamgai and other fire officers were present on the occasion. A programme on national fire service day was also held in Haridwar district. The officers paid homage to firemen who died on-duty.
Each year, a theme is prepared to raise awareness among the people about fire safety norms. This year’s theme is “Adopt Safe Housekeeping Practices and Approved Electrical Appliances.”
The chief fire service officer Sharma said efforts would be made to raise awareness about the fire safety norms among the students, in particular, and the people, in general. Also, an awareness campaign will be organised in various government-run and private schools and some other important places in the district during the Fire Safety Week, he claimed.
The firemen, who have been deputed for awareness campaign, would give lecture on fire safety management and how to save one if a fire accident happens. The fire service officer Mamgai said fire can cause major disaster and loss of lives in buildings such as offices, hotels, shopping centers, hospitals, schools and homes. Such a disaster can be averted if the people adopt proper fire safety norms.
“The best prevention is to eliminate fire hazards. Therefore, you need to know what fire hazards are and what you should do to remove them from your homes or workplaces. These are the best ways to avoid disaster due to fire accident in the respective places. The officials of the government and commercial establishments will be motivated by the department officials to seek fire safety NOC from Dehradun Fire Service,” he added.
Mamgai appealed people to follow safety rules and contribute to society by saving lives of family and neighbours. “If you discover a fire hazard you may report to Fire Control Room or call Toll Free line 101 and 100,” he said.
