Dubbing the State Government-sponsored ‘Gyam Kumbh’ slated in Haridwar a farce, National Students Union of India (NSUI)-the Congress’s student affiliate- has decided to stage protest against the much-hyped upcoming event. The Congress student activists threatened to gherao Patanjali University Haridwar, the venue of the event to be inaugurated by the President Ram Nath Kovindon November 3.
The state NSUI president Mohan Bhandari said on Thursday that while the state government is staging the Gyan Kumbh farce by inviting VVIPs and educationalists it is the least concerned about the plight of the students here who remain deprived of higher education due to limited seats in the colleges based in the state. He said that things are so grim at the solitary central university of the state that neither the examinations are conducted on time nor the results are declared on schedule. The mark-sheets issued by the central university are also full of errors, he alleged. “The Government is turning a blind eye to these problems faced by the students,” he said. Citing the mass exodus of the over 900 students from NIT campus, demanding a permanent campus, he said that this is a very unfortunate development for the State.
The NSUI leader also alleged that the universities of the state are not in a position to implement Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) due to which the students are staring at an uncertain future. Bhandari added that thanks to the follies of Kumaon University, Sri Dev Suman University and Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU), the students are facing a number of problems with the academic year of many being wasted.
“We will not sit idle when the state government is out to enact a farce in the name of education. We will stage dharna outside the venue of the Gyan Kumbh to draw the attention of the state government to the grim scenario prevailing in the higher education realm of the State,” the state NSUI chief said.
