Pregnant women should take some precautions while celebrating Holi, advises prominent gynecologist Dr Sujata Sanjay of Sanjay Maternity centre. She said that with some simple safeguards the expecting mothers can enjoy the festival of joy and colours.
She warned that some colors, despite being branded “natural” or “organic” can still be harmful as their powder base contains harmful chemicals such as lead and mercury which can get absorbed and affect the foetus in a pregnant woman. Dr Sujata advised that homemade colours should be used by the pregnant women.
“Pregnant women have reduced immunity levels and are, therefore, more susceptible to illnesses and infections, and their skin is more sensitive as well. Chemical colors are made of synthetic, industrial dyes or oxidised metals which can be dangerous and have harmful health effects on the baby through breast milk.”
“Some colors are even carcinogenic. So lactating mothers should practice same caution as pregnant women,” Dr.Sujata said. The doctor said that homemade colours can be made by using turmeric, roli (sindoor), boiled beetroot and onions. She added that pregnant women should keep someone close while playing Holi. Dr Sujata said that too much sweet and fried food can harm the foetus and the mother.
She said expecting mothers should not booze or consume bhang (cannabis) on Holi and they should wear well-fitting clothes, anti-skid shoes and goggles to protect themselves.
