With rain continuing in the mountains and Terai, the Gaula river here has swept away land of dozens of farmers in Indranagar and Rawatnagar areas of Bindukhatta so far.
The recent rains in the mountains have caused the Gaula river to swell which in turn has made those living in the river bank areas in Bindukhatta concerned about their state. Some of the villagers here are face dire straits with their fertile land being lost to the river. Rawatnagar residents Rakesh Kumar, Ramu Rajbhar, Manoj Mehta, Nandan Rana, Kunwar Mehta, Mohan Singh Mehta and others claim to have lost many bighas of farmland to the swollen Gaula river. The river has continued to cut away land in the area. One of the locals, Rakesh Kumar said that he had lost about two bigha land to the river in the previous month and this month he lost about one bigha land to the river. He has been rendered homeless and landless, complained Kumar. Others like him also complain that no one has come to enquire about their condition so far.
In the Indranagar locality too dozens of villagers complain of having lost their farm lands to the river. They point out that the embankments constructed for flood protection had already been damaged in the past. The affected villagers are also dissatisfied with the authorities due to the failure of officials to facilitate flood protection apart from relief and compensation in case of damage caused by flooding.
