The transport department has given a green signal for installation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on old vehicles in state capital. These number plates are being compulsorily installed on the new vehicles but the old vehicles are exempted from it. Now the owners of old vehicles can also put on these plates if they wish, however there is no compulsion on them.
The Regional Transport Officer (RTO) of Dehradun, Sudhanshu Garg said that if the owners of the old vehicles want to install HSRP on their vehicles then they can apply for it. He added that new number plate would be installed in three to four days of the application.
The fee of the HSRP is Rs 440 for four wheelers and Rs 240 for two wheelers. It is learnt that the department has linked the data of old vehicles with the server of HSRPs due to which it is now possible to install them on old vehicles too.
The department appointed the link Utsav Auto systems private limited for providing the new high security number plates for the vehicles last year. The HSRP would ensure uniformity of number plates and in case of any theft, the chances of tracing the vehicle are more. It is worth mentioning here that the Government of India (GOI) had made it compulsory to install these number plates on new vehicles for ensuring security and uniformity last year. The GOI had acted on the orders of Supreme Court which directed it on the issue while hearing a petition of noted human right activist, Manjinder Singh Bitta.
