No policing over land mafias cornering lands illegally

Accusing police of taking no action against land mafias, Rajpur (Vivek Vihar) resident Vikas Verma said at a press conference on Friday that the land sharks are grabbing and selling lands worth crores with impunity with forged documents in the Rajpur Road area in league with some Municipal Corporation officers.

Verma accused Municipal Corporation officers of making a false death certificate of his uncle using which the land mafias grabbed and sold his uncle’s land in Rajpur area worth crores of rupees through fraudulent land documents. He demanded the administration to conduct an inquiry into the matter. Action should follow against the land mafias as well as the guilty civic body officials to stop recurrence of the same, he said.

Producing RTI reports regarding his uncle’s land, Verma said that the same land had been purchased by an Uttar Pradesh- based IPS officer.

“After the death of my uncle who was working in an ordinance factory in Maharashtra, death certificate was forged by the land mafias to grab the land.  As peer RTI report, two different death certificates were issued by the civic body. We are sure, some civic body officers helped them with the forged death certificate in lieu of money. According to the forged certificate, my uncle died on November 22, 1993. However, he died on January 16, 1997 in Pipri, Maharashtra,” he said.

He said that police must investigate the case seriously and find out the truth behind the matter.  “Unless they step in effectively the people like us would be robbed of our lands by the mighty mafias who are hand in glove with a section of the civic body officials,” he said, adding that police despite being appealed to repeatedly refused to probe the case and fix the guilty.

Observers say things are grim with the prices of lands spiraling by leaps and bounds in Dehradun and its outskirts. “With police sitting on such matters, things would turn worse and it would prove difficult for any person to hold on to his land  with the mighty mafias  breathing down  their necks,” said one of the observers.
