‘No Horn Day’ was observed on the campus of Shri Mahant Indiresh hospital and Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences on Wednesday. The day was observed under ‘National Initiative for Safe and Sound India’ by the ENT Department of the hospital.
A comprehensive mass awareness programme was also launched on the occasion in which stickers and publicity material over the hazards of Noise Pollution and ways to reduce it were distributed among the staff members, patients, their attendants, visitors and students.
In an awareness lecture, Dr (Col) V P Singh and Dr Arvind Verma explained the students about noise pollution, its hazards and ways to reduce it. They said that this type of pollution leads to disorders like mental irritation, road rage, lack of sleep, hearing loss, hypertension and altered brain chemistry. They further informed that the data available with Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board shows that noise pollution level in Dehradun has alarming levels.
The noise level in busy intersections which fall under commercial areas should not exceed 65 decibels during the daytime (6 am to 10 pm) and 55 decibels at night (10 pm to 6 am). The experts argue that Uttarakhand with its 70 percent forest cover should adhere to the environmental laws because noise pollution harms the wildlife.
