After extending the period of the 20 per cent rebate on the property tax multiple times this year, the Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal 'Gama' finally decided not to extend this rebate further for the property taxpayers of the previous financial year. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) had to close its tax section in the middle of March due to which hundreds of property taxpayers could not deposit the tax.
Though the corporation has given the option to submit the property tax online during the lockdown period too, very few people deposited the tax online. Furthermore, the MCD resumed the property tax collection with the 20 per cent rebate in Town Hall from June 8 in Unlock 1 with the token system to minimise the risk of contagion. However, this rebate ended on July 31 and the mayor said that it would not be extended further for the taxpayers of the last financial year.
Though the same rebate is applicable to the taxpayers of the current financial year, the taxpayers of the last year will have to deposit the property tax with the penalty along with the property tax of the current year, as informed by the officials.
As per the norms of the corporation to penalise the taxpayers for delayed payment, the penalty of Rs 100, Rs 1,000, and Rs 5,000 is imposed on the area of the property up to 50 square metres, 200 square metres, and 400 square metres respectively.
The penalty of Rs 15,000 is imposed on the property of more than 400 square metres. Moreover, if the submission of the property tax is delayed by 30 days, five per cent of the penalty is imposed as the delay fee by the corporation.
