District traffic police started a new system near Saint Joseph’s Academy on Subhash Road from Tuesday to resolve traffic congestion.
The SJA administration agreed to let four wheelers for dropping and picking up students enter and park from the Rajpur Road gate and two wheelers from the Subhash Road gate. For school bus, auto, rickshaw and Tata Magic, one lane system was established. Drivers of vehicles which arriving after the parking space inside the school and on the lane established by the police is full were asked to park their vehicles at the secretariat parking.
On the first day, police personnel had to face some resistance from the parents.
However, the officials are optimistic that this step will help in solving the traffic problem on Subhash Road. Superintendent of Police (traffic) Prakash Chandra Arya said, “The increased number of four wheelers due to rain affected the otherwise smooth operation of traffic.
The new system was still effective on the first day. About 90 per cent of the parents came to pick up their children in four wheelers, we only allowed one lane for parking on Subhash Road. Rest 10 per cent of the parents who came on two wheelers parked their vehicles inside the campus.” He further added, “We have again spoken with the school authority to convey the message to the parents that they should come according to the timings of school. Junior students leave the school earlier than the senior students.
So, we have asked them to convey this message to the parents that they should arrive here to receive their children at their particular school timings, then only we will allow them to park their vehicles here.” It is pertinent to mention here that limited parking space for the parents who come to receive their children from SJA has always been a major factor for the poor condition of traffic management and traffic chaos at Subhash Road.
Earlier many attempts were taken to resolve the issue but to no avail. The police HQ and secretariat are also located at a stone’s throw from this school.
