The country has received 42 per cent less rainfall this year. Although it is not an alarming situation because we had received 16 per cent rainfall in June 2013 while this year we received mere 10 per cent rain in the month of June. As far as monsoon deficit is concerned then we would be able to analyse the it after 120 days. These views were expressed by the Director General of Meteorology, Dr laxman Singh Rathore while interacting with media persons after inaugurating the new building of the meteorological centre in Dehradun on Saturday.
Rathore further said that Monsoon will reach Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in next two to three days. As far as Uttarakhand is concerned then Monsoon would be good here. Although after July 9 Monsoon would be more active. He further said that situation is not alarming because we can compensate delay monsoon by sowing early variety seeds in consultation with agriculture department.
Department of Earth and Science Secretary Shailesh Naik said that now weather forecast is directly related to common man. Its importance is getting increased day by day because now even people are approaching weather department before finalizing date for their ceremony. For instance on Friday people were making query with weather department about forecast to solemnize their marriage ceremony. To serve the mass we are working very hard to provide more accurate information to the people.
At present we are giving weather forecast of 15 specific places to the state government. For this we are using best technology, which are being used by the developed countries for forecast. Even we are seeking their feedback as well and will increase the area in future as well.
As far as early warning system is concerned then we get information about extreme rainfall before less than 24 hours and sometime we received forecast for next three days. Recently we got forecast then we managed to evacuate the place. In this scenario there is need to communicate the people about weather forecast on time so that they can take precautionary measure.
To help the people we are providing weather map in different colours i.e. Red, Orange, Yellow and Green. Red is warning, orange means be ready to be evacuated and yellow for administration and green for all clear. As far as Doppler radar installation is concern then we have identified the places and most probably we will be able to install the radar before the onset the monsoon-2015. Although currently we are procuring data from Doppler radar situation at Patiala, Punjab.
Several other dignitaries including joint secretary JS Khati and state metereorological centre Director Anand Sharma and others were present during inaugural ceremony. On the occasion dignitaries also sowed few plants in the campus as part of contribution to the environment.
