Ashok Kumar, who has taken over as the new SSP of Mandi, on Saturday asserted that the role of police has undergone a new change after independence with the adoption of a new concept of community or people friendly policing which should invoke “friendship” and not “ fear”.
With his first interaction with media he spurned the approach of a small section of police men who still were perverted with the British time mentality of terrorising the citizens. let the criminals fear the police and the common people love them as protectors of their life and property, he said.
Replying to a question of challans by traffic police, he explained he was not in favour of indiscriminate challans, but those indulging in speeding and rash driving, overtaking and ignoring the signals etc must be brought to book as they endanger human lives.
On huge traffic jams while police stop vehicles for checking, the SSP promised to look into this problem and added that in the wake of increased activities of anti-nationals, Himachal Police has an added responsibilities as dozens of hydro power power projects are located in the State.
