The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) is planning to introduce two year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course instead of the prevalent one year course. The NCTE gives the recognitions to the BEd colleges and regulates their activities in India.
The President of Association of Self Financed Institutes of Uttarakhand Sunil Agarwal said that the NCTE had constituted a committee to overhaul the teacher education programe in the country and it had submitted its recommendations. These recommendations were discussed in a meeting of North Zone regional committee in Jaipur recently which Agarwal attended. The NCTE is planning to impose the new guidelines from November this year.
Agarwal said that the under the new plan the B.Ed course would be of two years in which a student would have to give school teaching of 16 weeks instead of 40 days only as under one year plan. Under the new guidelines, a B.Ed college would have to reapply for NCTE recognition after five years.Agarwal informed that the NCTE would now give recognition for B.Ed for only those colleges which offer other courses (like B.Sc. B.A) also.
He said that NCTE has proposed to increase the minimum teaching experience for becoming the Principal of a B.Ed college from the present 10 years to 15 years now.The new changes if implemented would mean a drastic change in the pattern of the teacher education. It is worth mentioning here that the NCTE has recently implemented a scheme where the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) is made compulsory for becoming a primary teacher in the country.
