In sync with the philosophy of NDA Government to promote Yoga, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has created a module of Yoga which would be incorporated in the syllabus of all teacher education courses.
The modules are prepared in both English and Hindi languages and would be part of curriculum in Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed), Bachelor of Education (B Ed) and Master of Education (M Ed) courses. The NCTE under revised regulation norms and standards (2014) introduced Yoga education as a compulsory area of study in all the teacher education programmes recognised by it.
The apex teaching body opined that the rationale for introducing this area of study in the curricula of teacher education in the country is its significance as a science of life and living which lead the individual to a state of health, happiness and harmony with self and others.
In a circular directed to heads of all education colleges, head of departments of education of all universities and Directors of education, the member Secretary of NCTE, Juglal Singh said that the modules of Yoga are available with NCTE and these are priced publications.
He said that since Yoga module is now made compulsory subject in curriculum of teacher education programmes every institute/ university should procure three sets of these modules.
Welcoming the decision, the President of association of self financed institutes of Uttarakhand, Sunil Agarwal said that the emphasis on Yoga in the teacher education courses would help the future teachers understand the benefit of Yoga which they would pass on to their students.
