The level of sanitation and quality of food served to the inmates should be maintained in the Nainital jail. The Nainital district magistrate Deepak Rawat issued this instruction to the deputy jailer during the joint quarterly inspection of the jail along with district judge Kumkum Rani and senior superintendent of police Senthil Akdai Krishnaraj. The trio asked about the condition of the inmates and sought details about the status of their advocacy and other issues.
The district magistrate said that Government advocates would be provided for the jail inmates who had not been able to secure advocacy due to some reason. The DM directed the deputy jailer to ensure that visitors coming to the jail to meet the inmates should be allowed to bring only jaggery, soap, biscuits, fruits and ghee for the inmates and nothing else. The meeting between the inmates and visitors will be facilitated only in the presence of jail officials, he stressed.
It should be noted here that the Nainital district jail has the capacity to hold 61 inmates but at present a total of 124 persons are incarcerated in this jail. The chief judicial magistrate Nandan Singh Rana and deputy jailer Pawan Kothari were also among those present during the joint inspection.
