Nagar Nigam workers continue strike for 6th day

Demanding regularisation, the contractual workers of Nagar Nigam continued their strike for the sixth day on Tuesday and threatened to further intensify the strike from December 7 if their demands are not met by then. The workers also served a memorandum to the State Government, asking it to decide things in no time on the matter. Meanwhile, some Congress workers have also come forward in support of the Nagar Nigam workers. The agitators hoped that the  Haridwar visit of the Chief Minister on Wednesday would help solve their problems.

On Tuesday, the contractual workers, former Councillors of Nagar Nigam and Congress workers gathered outside Nagar Nigam office to raise their demands. Speaking to The Pioneer, president of the Congress’s women rural wing, Monika Jain said, “We support the cause of the contractual workers. We have requested the city Mayor Manoj Garg who is from BJP to initiate the long-delayed process.  Despite working since 2004, these workers are yet to be regularised.”

It is also learnt that the clearance of their salaries is also being delayed. One of the contractual workers Vijay Kumar said, “We are facing problems from all sides. Due to paucity of funds, Nagar Nigam credits the salary at a gap of eight months. It is very difficult to run the household expenditures, given the situation. For the past one decade, we have been demanding to be included in the  payroll. However, this time  we would see the end of things.”
