Nagar Kirtan on Nanak Jayanti leads to traffic congestion

Published on:

As has become a routine affair in the State capital, traffic congestion was faced for long durations in various city roads as a result of the Nagar Kirtan held on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti on Monday.

The Nagar Kirtan procession led by the Panj Piyaras started along with devotees from the Patelnagar Gurudwara at about 1 pm. The Nagar Kirtan procession passed through various busy and already congested localities including Saharanpur Chowk, Prince Chowk, Dilaram Chowk, Clock Tower, Paltan Bazaar and Dhamawala before reaching the Guru Singh Sabha.

Road users suffered a lot as traffic jams formed on busy roads including Saharanpur Road, Gandhi Road and other roads in the State capital.

The police had to struggle considerably to facilitate resumption of traffic flow after some time. It is pertinent to mention here that religious, cultural and organisational processions held frequently by members of various communities and groups in Dehradun have become a major cause for traffic jams lasting many hours causing public nuisance.

In the past, the then DM and SSP had talked about charting out a particular route-circuit and timings for such processions to be carried out in the State capital to minimise the severe traffic congestion resulting from such activities. However, so far nothing concrete has been done by the authorities to mitigate the various problems being caused by processions taken out on city roads for various purposes.
