The State BJP’s principal spokesperson Munna Singh Chouhan invoked the legacy of the legendary Purushottam Das Tandon to remind the present Speaker of Uttarakhand Assembly the exalted stature the chair of the Speaker embodies.
“Tandon once famously said that if a single member of the House dissented against him, it amounted to no-confidence motion against him. This is what constitutes the benchmark of what the Speaker stands for,” he said.
Continuing, he said that Tandon had tendered his resignation after a member made a statement against one of his rulings. “Despite appeal from all quarters to withdraw his resignation, he stuck to his guns. He was morality incarnate,” Chouhan said.
Contrasting his legacy with the role of the present Speaker of the State Assembly, the BJP leader said that the latter should emulate the towering giant and act accordingly. “However, what he did on March 18 stands in absolute opposition to the exalted example late Tandon had set before the people of the country,” he said.
