The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun continues to face a shortage of staff for the maintenance of civic sanitation in the 60 municipal wards of the city.
The corporation is in the process of procuring more garbage containers and vehicles to improve the level of civic sanitation in the State capital.
It should be noted here that at least 200 tonnes of solid municipal waste is generated in Dehradun every day.
The door to door collection of garbage and its disposal being undertaken by the corporation is affected by staff shortage and other factors. In addition to this, the reluctance of many people to use the door to door garbage collection facility paying a monthly charge is also affecting the level of civic sanitation in town with such people dumping garbage improperly either in the open or in roadside drains.
According to MCD officials, the corporation is in the process of procuring 30 additional garbage containers and 10 more vehicles for transporting the garbage.
The corporation is planning various measures to ensure the desired level of sanitation in town.
Once the solid waste management project being implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) becomes fully operational, the level of cleanliness in the State capital is expected to improve considerably.
