Municipal authority unable to lift garbage punctually due to shortage of vehicles

Published on:

Due to shortage of vehicles for transporting garbage from the lake city to Haldwani for disposal, the municipal authority is unable to ensure timely lifting of garbage from various localities of Nainital. The local residents complain that while the Nainital municipal council is clearing garbage from prominent localities in the town, the garbage being generated in other localities is not being lifted regularly, often being left in piles for some days. Those living in the interior localities of the town complain that they are suffering due to the irregularity in collection of garbage from their areas by the municipal authority. The garbage generated is lying scattered by the roadside in various localities of Nainital including Ayarpata, Sukhatal, Snowview, Handibandi, Barapatthar, Pangtu Marg and near Sherwood among other areas. Apart from this, the garbage has not been collected by the municipal staff from various localities for many days now. The officials of the municipal council state that garbage from interior and other smaller localities is being collected in one place and then being transported to Haldwani for disposal. It is also pertinent to mention here that garbage littering the roadsides ends up in nullahs and mountain streams. From here, the garbage ends up in the Naini lake after even a brief spell of rain. Observers point out that garbage disposal is one of the major challenges being faced in Uttarakhand with the authorities not having succeeded in facilitating an efficient scientific waste disposal system in any major town of the state so far.
