Mountaineering must for cops' training

Published on:

Mountaineering will soon be part of basic training for police personnel in Uttarakhand. Under the blueprint, charted out by the police training department, the training in mountaineering will be compulsory for all police personnel - from constables to IPS probationers.

The training department decided to equip police personnel with the skill of mountaineering after several police personnel expressed difficulty in working efficiently amid extremely odd weather condition at high hills during relief work after recent natural disaster. The training will be of around a month.

Noted mountaineers would give tips to the police personnel on how to cross the river, what precautions to be taken during trekking, and how to deal with odd weather

condition and maintenance of the attire used in trekking at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). Police training cell that is in touch with the NIM officials has got

positive response from the institute.

Things would be finalised after a meeting for which schedule is likely to be fixed within a week after approval of the Director General of Police (DGP) to the blueprint.

The training would be made part of the basic police training curriculum for the police personnel up to the rank of deputy superintendent of police (Dy SP) provincial police services (PPS) officers, while IPS probationers will undergo the same during their three months training imparted to them in the State before their posting.

During the three-month

compulsory training, the IPS

probationers are apprised of the topography, local language, rules and regulations of the State Government and different information about the State.

Now onwards, the IPS, who will be allotted Uttarakhand cadre, would undergo training in mountaineering also. It would be part of the three-month training.

The training in mountaineering is a brainchild of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) GS Martolia who observes that each police personal of Uttarakhand must undergo the training in mountaineering as it would support him as well as in relief operations in case of any disaster.

"This is a hilly State. It is full of tough terrains and high hills. There are several pockets in the tough terrains where an untrained person can not perform. So, we have planned the training in mountaineering for police personnel. They must know mountaineering since it would be of great use in case of any disaster like situation," Martolia said.

The officials, who would do well in the training, would be sent for the advance course in mountaineering.

These personnel would be deployed for relief work in case of disaster like situation. He observes that the training would boost up confidence of the force and would also help in carrying out the relief work at a greater pace.
