The advent of the monsoon has brought with it much relief in Nainital where rainfall has increased the level of water in the Naini lake which had earlier registered an alarming drop in its water level. According to sources, about 105 mm rainfall was registered in the lake city on the weekend which has not only brought about a marked rise in the water level in Naini lake but also resulted in water accumulation in Sukhatal as a result of the rising level of Naini lake. The rainwater carried by local sources recharges Naini and Sukhatal but due to encroachments near Sukhatal, the water is pumped out after it reaches a certain level. It will be recalled that various meetings and inspects were held earlier this year by officials due to the depleting level of water in the Naini lake with serious concerns being expressed about the health of the lake. The rains have for now brought about a marked improvement in the State of the lake.
Apart from this the rain on the weekend also led to collapse of a wall on the route to the police hospital. The debris of the collapsed wall damaged a motorcycle while the building located above the collapsed wall is stated to be facing some risk. Elsewhere in the Nainital district, four rural roads were reported to have been blocked by boulder and debris following sustained rain. Sources inform that due to the rain, the Devidhura-Saud, Amel-Khola, Gandhigram-Pastola and Chamoli-Badaun rural roads have become blocked. As a result, the said rural areas have lost road link with the town areas.
The Public Works Department was stated to be working on clearing the blocked rural roads for traffic. The main roads are reported to be open for traffic.
