In order to provide better facilities to the passengers, city bus unions have been asked to make necessary modifications in the buses in Dehradun district to make commuting more convenient.

A meeting was organised at traffic directorate on Wednesday under Deputy Inspector General Keval Khurana with city bus unions from various districts for better traffic management in the state.

A committee was established in the meeting which will be submitting its report to the traffic directorate in 10 days, regarding the modification to be done in the city buses. According to the information provided by the police, in the discussion held with representatives of city bus unions of Dehradun, it was stated that in order to provide better public transport facilities city buses should be modified to encourage more people to use public transport instead of their private vehicles.  It was suggested that in the buses operating presently in Dehradun seating arrangements should be better, windows should be bigger, lights and design of the bus should be changed and the steps should be comfortable. The committee will be submitting a detailed report to the traffic directorate in 10 days. DIG Khurana also asked union members to help the department with operation Helping Hands, under which victims of any road accident shall be transported immediately to the nearby hospital or community health centre. The union members agreed to help police in this, which will result in the operation of three to four thousand public transport buses playing the role of ambulance in the coming months. To make sure these temporary ambulances do not face any problems traffic directorate will be providing them with the list of hospitals on their specific routes.

The union representatives also informed DIG Khurana about the problems they face in Dehradun. This includes the problems of traffic congestion near Premnagar Chowk and Chuna Bhatta because of a liquor shop and traffic congestion near Curzon Road because of the private vehicles that come to drop and pick up students from Brightland School.

Similarly, union representatives of Haridwar said that due to the ongoing construction work at National Highway in the district, vehicles coming from outer states during weekends create traffic jams.
