MNAs asked to prepare database of slum settlements

The Urban Development secretary DS Garbyal has directed Mukhya Nagar Adhikaris of Municipal Corporations to prepare database on slum settlements in the area under their purview. They were also directed to draft concrete action plan for relocating slum settlements from flood affected areas to vacant municipal lands. Garbyal issued these instructions while chairing a meet to review the status of slums in municipal areas and the condition of civic sanitation.

The State Slum Settlement Development Committee chairman and MlA Rajkumar asked the officials to provide information about the total number of slum settlements in their municipal areas, the total homes, duration since their settlement and status of property tax, names of departments owning the settlement lands, area of vacant municipal lands, infrastructural facilities available in slums including power connection, potable water supply, roads, etc, settlements that can benefit from Rajiv Awas Yojana and various departmental lands lying vacant in towns.

Rajkumar said that the toilets constructed near slums by civic bodies need to be repaired as those are presently not usable due to absence of water supply. Considerable sums have been spent through MP and MlA funds, PWD, Peyjal Nigam and other bodies for infrastructural development in slum settlements but due to some incomplete formalities, the youth living in such settlements are unable to secure bank loans which in turn is affecting the generation of self-employment in slums.
