Regarding the allegation of several rounds of celebratory firing being resorted to at a programme organised by Khanpur MlA Pranav Singh ‘Champion’ to welcome his son Divya Pratap, who had won the bronze medal in international Junior Shooting Championship, the Haridwar police have registered a case under appropriate sections of IPC against the MlA and about a dozen unidentified persons-all his followers- in Roorkee Police Station.

Champion has always been in the glare of media for wrong reasons as he has earned notoriety in taking liberty with laws. In some incidents, police lodged an FIR against him but no action was taken against him. When senior police officers are asked about the cases involving the controversial MlA, they are accustomed to skirting things, giving the routine answer that the cases are being probed into.

MlA Champion had organised a reception to welcome his son on Saturday to hail his performance in international Junior Shooting Championship held in Finland on June 4. However, things turned chaotic with Champion and his supporters allegedly having resorted to celebratory firing several times.  Those present started dispersing, as the firing triggered scare. later, Champion and his supporters left the place.

Roorkee Police Station in-charge inspector BD Uniyal said that a case under Sections 268, 336 and 30 -Arms Act has been registered against Champion and his supporters in the police station. The video footage of the incident has been recovered and the police are investigating the case, he added.

Over the past few years, he had allegedly fired in the air at public places several times. Two recent incidents have come to the fore. One is related to his allegedly firing in the residence of the cabinet minister Harak Singh Rawat in Dehradun and the other related to a complaint a shopper based on Mohini Road, Dehradun had lodged against him, alleging that the MlA had threatened him when he had  refused to recharge his driver’s mobile. Police are still ‘investigating’ the cases.
