Beware, if you are going anywhere by using your own conveyance in the city, then you should strictly follow traffic rules; otherwise, the city patrol unit will impose penalty under Motor Vehicle Act. The city patrol unit seized around one and half dozen vehicles and around 700 challans were imposed since April 1.

Talking to The Pioneer, city residents have expressed mixed reaction on deployment of city patrol unit. Some road users are surprised to see police force in new attire on heavy bikes making rounds of the city and imposing challans for traffic violations.

Amit Chauhan, a college student, said that apart from local police station force, traffic police are deployed on roads for imposing challans for traffic violations in the state capital. Introduction of a unit of police force named new city patrol unit is nothing, but wastage of public fund by the police department. According to him, due to limited allotment of funds on petrol by the police department, Cheetah police at each police station are not functional as per requirements.

Patelnagar resident Sumit Rana, who used to go to Premnagar daily for his job, said, “We should appreciate the police department for introducing city patrol unit as it would put check on road accidents, use of mobile phone while driving, drunken driving, overspeeding, other traffic violations in the state capital. Apart from this, this unit will also act as a swift response team for crimes like eve-teasing, chain snatching and other offences in the city.

State Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Ram Singh Meena said that the unit comprises of two personnel each on a total of 12 motorcycles of which 10 bikes are deployed on roads in different areas for 16 hours (from 8 am to 12 pm) while two bikes have kept as reserve. Expenditure on petrol for city patrol unit will be borne under funds released from PHQ or from 75 per cent to total amount collected in penalties for traffic violations by the police department in which State Government had recently approved it.  This unit will also check road accidents, intervention in road crimes in the city, he added. SP Vinita Kukreti said that the teams are well trained and are equipped with modern gadgets, which were procured by using funds released by central government for police modernizations. Each motorcycle borne unit is handled by one sub-inspector and one constable with a wireless set and a video camera for filming developments while in action. The units will be in touch with the control room. The team members have been directed to behave politely, she added.
