Cloudy conditions coupled with light rain showers badly hit normal life in different parts of the region here on Wednesday.
More so, chilly conditions due to sharp drop in the temperature only added to the woes of the citizens particularly officer-goers, school children and occasional visitors.
People could be seen restricting their movements to their respective offices or homes on Wednesday on account of adverse weather conditions. However, even after completion of the extended holiday period, school children had to go to schools, despite cold conditions as reported on Wednesday morning.
In view of the decreasing temperature, the Nainital district administration had announced winter holiday in schools from January 1 to 15 but later it had to extend the holiday period for junior class students to January 20.
Meanwhile, as has been experienced, the atmospheric conditions coupled with thick fog may only worsen vehicular movements during the peak winter season ahead.
During the first fortnight of this month, vehicular movements remained badly disrupted even on long routes i.e. from Nainital/Haldwani to Delhi as fog engulfed the entire northern region.
However, amid cold conditions, rainfall experienced on last weekend provided much needed relief to the farmers of these region. The rainfall came as more useful for the farmers of the hilly region as they are largely dependent on rain due to poor irrigation.
In the meanwhile, the district administration of Nainital has asked the officials concerned including respective SDMs, tehsildars, civic bodies to put in place necessary arrangements like wood-stoves and night shelters so that people particularly needy ones may not have to face any hardships during this winter season.
