'Men, not women, responsible for most of infertility-related problems'

Our society stigmatizes woman for failure to produce children but the fact remains that men are responsible for almost 50 percent of infertility-related problems, said famous infertility expert Dr Sanjay Patil while talking with the media persons here on Sunday.

The celebrated In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) expert said that most of the patients coming to doctors like him are females. “These women are brought to us mostly by their mother-in-laws. In most of the cases the husbands are conspicuous by their absence. It takes a lot of counseling to bring the husband to get his sperm count checked,’’ he said.

Dr Patil informed that IVF techniques have become very advanced since they started in India in early 1980’s. He said that now with a technique called Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection, it is now possible to extract sperms even from the testes of a male declared azoospermic by doctors, for IVF.

The infertility expert was in Dehradun to participate in a camp on infertility organised by the Morpheus Prasad International IVF Centre located on Haridwar by Pass road.

The Managing Director (MD) of the hospital Dr Hari Om Prasad said that more than 100 patients availed the benefit of the camp. He claimed that the nascent centre has State of the art equipment and techniques for IVF.

The coordinator of the hospital, Dr Ritu Prasad informed that with the help of IVF techniques the persons with zero sperm count and women with infertility problems can produce their own biological child. She said that the hospital charges `75,000 for the IVF technique.
