The Dehradun district police remaining deeply worried over the unabated accident spree taking toll of lives, a meeting of road safety committee members was held at Vikas Bhawan in Dehradun on Friday with the Dehradun additional district magistrate (administration) Arvind Kumar Pandey in the chair where stress was laid on drafting a concrete plan to clamp down on rash driving, drunk driving and overloading.
Pandey said that coordination among the departments is a must to achieve tangible result on the ground. Transport and police department officers, sub-divisional magistrates and tehsildars must coordinate among themselves to stop accidents caused by human faults, he said.
He said that as per experiences, the vehicles coming from Vikasnagar area tend to over-speed, resulting in the spiraling number of road accidents. Besides, he cautioned the officers against the vehicles transporting the mined materials, saying that they are generally overloaded.
They if found overloaded must be impounded and the owners be slapped with penalties, he said.
He also spoke of the vehicles being parked in the no parking zones along hotels, malls and other commercial establishments. This is leading to traffic jams and often to road accidents, he said, adding that the police officers on duty must ask the people over the loudhailers to park their vehicles at the designated parking zones only. Besides, those running such commercial establishments would be held accountable if parking mess happens, he warned.
While the district education officer has been directed to ensure that the students are taught to abide by the traffic rules the transport department officers have been asked to put up flexes and hoardings to create awareness of the traffic norms.
Pandey also directed the public works department officers to identity the accident-prone points and to have warning boards installed there. Besides, the potholes on various roads must be repaired immediately and speed limit boards must be installed at various places across the district. Forest officers have been asked to lop trees standing along the roads. As per the standard, speed breakers would be set up and they should be painted white, he added.
