Meet cancellation irks workers at SP's U'khand unit

With the Samajwadi Party cancelling its two-day long national executive meeting, which was scheduled at Haridwar on September 11-12, several youths, who expressed interest to join the party, have shelved their plan. Besides, the decision has also irked several workers of Uttarakhand SP unit.

The interested youths said that they would join the membership of the party in presence of national president Mulayam Singh Yadav or UP CM Akhilesh Yadav. The party State unit president Prof Satya Narayan Sachan confirmed the development.

He, however, said that soon after the executive, the party would organise a membership programme here in which the youths would join the SP. He also indicated that a senior SP leader would remain present in the meeting. The SP leader denied making comment on resentment among the party workers after cancellation of the meeting.

Prof Sachan may have avoided making comment on the issue, but the several office bearers and workers are vocal into the matter. They unanimously observe that the decision threw a wet blanket on spirit of the party workers who were busy in preparations for the general election.

The party members feel ignored following the decision of shifting the venue from Haridwar to Agra.

They commonly believe that the decision would weaken the party trying to create a space for it in the state. The party workers also observe that the party could do well on two seats in the state during the general elections 2014.

Though none of them wished to be quoted, they want their message- the decision of shifting the venue will not be in the interest of the party- to be conveyed to the party leadership.

A leader said the decision clearly implies that Uttarakhand doesn’t have prominence in the eyes of the national leadership. The perception eventually will demoralise the workers.

An office-bearer, who played proactive role in making arrangements for the executive meeting (cancelled), said, "A large number of youths were about to join the party in presence of UP CM Akhilesh Yadav. Cancellation of the meeting withheld their joining also."

Now they have shelved their plan. “Had they joined the party, it would have been proved beneficial for the party. Eventually, they work to strengthen the party at ground level in the State,” the leader said, adding that the Party did well in Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls 2012 following the huge support by the youths.

Another SP leader, who enjoys long association with the SP, is also not happy with the move. He restrains from saying anything before media as utterance in the media may incur disciplinary action against. The leader also wishes that the party leadership should know the feeling among the workers over cancellation of the venue.
