A team of Medical Council of India (MCI) visited the facilities in the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) and its associated hospital on Wednesday. The MCI team was invited by the nascent medical college for renewal of the letter of Permission (lOP) granted earlier this year. Though the visit of the team was expected, the sudden arrival of team members in the office of the Principal in morning took everyone by surprise. After introducing them to the Principal the team headed towards the associated hospital of GDMC. The three member MCI team consisted  Professor and Head of Department of department of community medicine, Bangalore medical College and research institute, Dr TS Ranganath, Dr Sukre Shivaji  of Government Medical College Aurangabad and Dr Jayesh Dutt of Medical College Ahmedabad. The trio visited the Wards, Operation Theatres, registration counter, billing section, radiology facilities, pathology laboratory and blood bank of the hospital. The team looked surprised when it was told that more than 1600 new patients have registered themselves for the Out Patient Departments (OPDs) of the hospital. The team was told by the hospital authorities that an OPD of 3000 patients is not uncommon in the hospital which is the biggest health facility in the state. Thankfully enough, the team visited the hospital when the contractual workers had resumed work after strike otherwise it would have witnessed a chaotic situation in the hospital.  The Medical Education Director Dr Ahsutosh Sayana, Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital Dr KK Tamta, Deputy Superintendent Dr J S Rana and other senior doctors of the hospital accompanied the team.  The MCI members asked the MS Dr Tamta to submit the number of OPD and In house patients for the day. He was also asked to inform the number of normal and cesarean deliveries done in last twenty four hours. The team also sought information about the food and sanitation.

After visiting the hospital the team inspected facilities at the medical college. The lecture theaters, library and hostels were inspected by the team. The visiting team of the MCI also had a head count of the faculty members of the medical college.

The Principal of the GDMC, Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta claimed that the inspectors of the MCI appreciated the well organised medical college, working of the OPD and termed the clinical workload on hospital as good.

The MCI team is on a two day visit and would further inspect the facilities in the medical college on Thursday.

The apex body of medical education had granted the lOP to the GDMC on June 08 this year based on which admission to 150 students was given in the one year MBBS course.
