The authorities of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) here have sent a proposal to the State Government that a big chunk of land owned by the Dehradun Municipal Corporation adjacent to the administrative and academic block of the college in Dehra Khas area should be handed over to it so that a super specialty hospital could be developed on it.
This initiative assumes significance since some organisations and a section of doctors of the associated hospital of GDMC were demanding that the erstwhile Doon hospital which was merged into the medical college should again be made a District hospital like before.
The Principal of GDMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta said that based on newspapers reports that municipal corporation possess a land piece near the medical college we have requested the government to initiate the process of transfer of the land to the medical college. He said that the land would be used to build a multi specialty hospital. The Mayor of Dehradun in some programe had claimed that the municipal corporation owns 120 Bighas of land in Dehra-Khas and in public interest this land can be handed over to the GDMC. He said that corporation would act once it receives any formal request for land.
The clamour to reconvert the Doon hospital into the district hospital is growing. The Rajpur road MlA, Rajkumar has met the state Chief Minister and health minister with the demand. The government’s decision on the demand would be worth watching as huge sum of money has been spent till date on construction of new OPD and Operation Theater (OT) complex. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has also granted its permission to the college on the basis of the 450 bed hospital. One of senior doctor of the GDMC said that it would not be possible to reconvert the associated hospital into district hospital as authorities have progressed much ahead in making necessary alterations in the hospital so that it adheres to the norms of the MCI.
