MDDA to seal wedding hubs violating norms in Doon

The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) is now planning to seal more than a dozen non-compoundable wedding points operating in the State capital.

These wedding points have been operating in various parts of Dehradun while blatantly violating various regulations and causing civic inconvenience. The MDDA had initiated action against unauthorised wedding points in the State capital last year but nothing concrete has been done against most of the wedding points violating various regulations in Dehradun. The MDDA officials state that action will be initiated in the near future but skeptics have little reason to believe this.

last year, the MDDA had asked owners of all wedding points in Dehradun to submit the maps of their venues and get them compounded. However, due to various factors, action in this regard has been delayed for more than a year. The MDDA secretary Banshidhar Tiwari said that “many wedding point owners had had their venues compounded. About 20 wedding points which are non-compoundable will be sealed. The authority will initiate action in this direction in the near future,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that there are more than 100 wedding points of varied dimensions in the State capital. Though officials State that most of them are now authorised, the locals complain that the number of unauthorised wedding points is higher than admitted by the authorities. With the zonal development plan for the Dehradun masterplan (amended) 2025 slated to be drafted again, the number of unauthorised wedding points might change due to amendment in land use and other aspects in the zonal development plan.

Owners of many wedding points in Dehradun are guilty of going against the land use, violating fire safety regulations and have failed to provide free parking space among other violations. Barring a few exceptions, citizens, especially those sharing the locality with wedding points suffer from various problems like noise pollution, improper garbage disposal, traffic congestion and civic nuisance caused by the events held at such venues.
