MDDA sends traffic plan to depts for action

The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority has sent a proposed traffic plan for Dharmpur Chowk and Araghar Chowk to the departments concerned. If approved, the implementation of these traffic plans could decongest these two intersections which could then pave way for similar efforts at other sites suffering from traffic congestion, said MDDA secretary Prakash Chandra Dumka.

Talking to The Pioneer, Dumka said the proposed traffic plan was submitted recently by the authority to the Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Public Works Department and the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun. A joint inspection was also conducted in this regard a few days ago. The plans propose proper utilisation of the available space and some minor alterations to resolve traffic congestion frequently experienced in these locations.

Since the shops cannot be removed, some minor adjustments can be made to facilitate smoother flow of traffic here, he said. If the proposed plans are approved and successfully implemented, similar measures could be taken in other locations that suffer from chronic traffic congestion. Regarding the incorporation of seismic safety features especially in multistoried buildings being constructed under the purview of the MDDA, Dumka said the condition of getting the building structurally designed and certified by a structural engineer is observed to ensure incorporation of such features.

The authority is also working on the riverfront development project for the Rispana and Bindal rivers in Dehradun. Though discussions are still being held as part of this project, the plan for now involves construction of paths and along the banks of the rivers and construction of shops for those displaced by the project.
