The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given a time of one month to the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) to remove the deficiencies observed by its team.
The MCI team had inspected the medical college and the associated hospital in the month of December last year to grant the renewal of letter of Permission (lOP) given to the college last year.
The MCI has objected on large number of vacant faculty positions in various departments of the nascent college. As much as 43 percent of the faculty positions in the college are vacant at present.
The MCI team has also objected on the old diagnostic machines in the radiology department of the associated hospital of GDMC and taken into account the non functional CT scan machine. The team has also taken into account the absence of furniture in the laboratories of the college. The Principal of the GDMC, Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta told The Pioneer that the college would start the process of recruitment after the assembly elections. He said that the most of the other objections raised by the MCI are minor in nature.
On the basis of the inspection of the apex body of medical education the MCI the Ministry of Health and family welfare granted it’s lOP to the GDMC on June 08 last year. The lOP was granted on the condition that the college would continuously upgrade its facilities. The College on the basis of this lOP gave admissions to 150 students from the merit of National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET)- 2016 in I year MBBS course of the college. As per the norms a new college has to invite MCI team every year for four years for renewal of permission. The college would have to continuously upgrade the facilities in the associated hospital and medical college for these renewals. For example the GDMC would have to upgrade the 300 bed associated hospital to 750 bed one.
