A team of Medical Council of India (MCI) made a surprise inspection of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) and associated hospital on Thursday.  The team comprising of Dr Achal Gulati of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, New Delhi and Dr B C Dutta of Government Silchar Medical College arrived at the college in morning. The arrival of the MCI team astounded the staff and administration of the college. The MCI team asked the college authorities for head count of staff and faculty positions. The team members also inspected the student hostel and objected on absence of guest room in the hostel. The team observed a faculty deficit of 23 percent and found that 4 percent seats of resident doctors are vacant. The team was assisted by Director Medical education Dr Ashutosh Sayana,  Medical Superintendent of the associated hospital of GDMC Dr K K Tamta, Dr R S Raina and Dr M K Pant during the inspection.

The Principal of the GDMC, Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta said that the team checked the educational qualification and other documents of the faculty members. He claimed that the team was satisfied with the findings. Dr Gupta said that MCI team raised some objections which were minor in nature which would be sorted out soon.

The MCI team had inspected the medical college and the associated hospital in the month of December last year to grant the renewal of letter of Permission (lOP) given to the college last year.

In this inspection, the MCI team had objected to large number vacant faculty positions (a deficiency of about 45 percent) and directed the medical college to fill these positions within a time frame of one month. In view of the assembly elections the college administration sought some time from the apex body of medical education. The MCI granted a reprieve of one month to the medical college. To fulfil its obligation the GDMC organised a walk in interview to fill vacant faculty positions on April 09 after which the college administration informed the MCI that it has got the required number of faculty.
