After much anticipation and confusion, the Medical Council of India (MCI) team finally arrived for re-inspection of facilities at the Doon Medical College (DMC) and its associated hospital on Thursday.
A three-member team consisting of Dr Pallavi Saple from Grant Medical College, Mumbai, Dr Sushil Kumar Singh from Swai Man Singh Medical College Jaipur and Dr Vijaya Kumari from Bengaluru arrived at the DMC located at Dehra Khas in morning. The team immediately divided itself into two as leaving Dr Vijaya Kumari in college, Dr Saple and Dr Singh landed at the associated hospital of DMC (formerly Doon hospital) and conducted inspection of the facilities. The team was accompanied by Director Medical education, Dr Ashutosh Syana and Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr K K Tamta during the visit of the hospital.
The MCI members objected to the fact that in TB ward there are no separate sections for male and female patients similarly the team appeared unhappy at the Operation Theatre (OT) of the ENT and reprimanded the staff for wearing shoes inside the main OT. In the gynecology department the team demanded the details of the birth certificates issued by the department which the authorities failed to provide immediately. The team found the billing section cramped and pointed out that a person should man the inquiry counter.
In the medical college, the team concentrated itself on the faculty the college has and appeared satisfied by the infrastructure and building.
An awkward moment for the DMC authorities was created when some of the workers of Mahanagar Congress arrived in the hospital and handed over a memorandum to the visiting team. In the memorandum these workers demanded that the associated hospital of the medical college should be shifted from the present location as it actually is a district hospital.
It is pertinent to mention here that a team of MCI had visited DMC in the month of January and listed 27 shortcomings in its report. The apex body of Medical education had given a time of one and half month to the DMC authorities to rectify these issues. The DMC after sorting out the objections requested the MCI for a re inspection. For about a month the team of MCI was expected but the delay in arrival spawned rumors. However the arrival of team removed the confusion and the hopes are still alive for the permission of MCI based on which the college would give admissions to the students in its I year course of MBBS.
