A three-member team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) visited the sites of the proposed Doon Medical College (DMC) on Tuesday. The team would submit its report based on which the all important approval for Medical College is given.

The officials overseeing the construction and other activities in the proposed medical college were somewhat taken aback on Tuesday morning when three gentlemen walked into the academic block of the college and said that they are from the MCI and are in the city to inspect the facilities of the college.

The team consisted of Dr RK Maheshwari of Swai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College Jaipur, Dr S Vishwanathan of Stanley Medical College, Chennai and Dr S Vishwanathan of Meerut Medical College.

The Principal of the college Dr Pradeep Bharati and Director Doon Medical College Dr Ahshutosh Syana accompanied the team of the MCI which inspected the academic and administrative blocks of the college.

It is learnt that the team of MCI expressed its displeasure on the pending works of the college. The team also sought the list of the staff members of the proposed college. It is worth mentioning here that the process of appointments in the faculty positions of the college is still not complete.

The college has recruited a Principal and some senior and junior residents for the medical college but the process of appointments for Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors is incomplete. The MCI team then visited the Doon hospital which is now the associated hospital of the medical college.

The team inspected the wards, Operation Theater (OT) and other facilities of the hospital. The Principal Medical Superintendent (PMS) Dr RS Aswal and medical superintendent Dr RK Tamta accompanied the team members.

The team of the MCI is on a two day inspection of the Doon medical college.

The Director of Doon Medical College, Dr Ashutosh Syana said MCI team would submit its report to the MCI and based on the report the MCI would take its decision on whether to give approval to the college or not.

Incidentally, it is third visit of MCI team in as many years for the Doon Medical College. In the previous two occasions the MCI had refused to give permission to the college in view of shoddy preparations.
