A war hero in his eighties, facing eviction will now be able to continue leading his life of meditation and reading. Mahavir Chakra awardee lt Gen (retd) Hanut Singh has been living a simple life in his home built in the Shivabalyogi Ashram compound in Dehradun. The plot of land on which his home was built belongs to the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun; so respecting the war hero, the MCD board has unanimously decided to transfer the ownership of this plot to him.

Gen Singh has been living in a house built on 1597.5 square metres in Kishanpur, Rajpur Road for the past 30 years. This land belongs to the MCD but in stead of evicting the war hero, the board uaninomously decided to allot the land to him and refer the matter to the State administration. When councillors said that the allotment should be conditional to prevent property dispute involving the bachelor general's relatives in the future, the mayor informed that the land would be allotted in the general's name to prevent any dispute in the future.

lt Gen (retd) Hanut Singh was decorated with the Mahavir Chakra for his role in the battle of Basantar in the 1971 war. He is considered as one of the finest armour commanders of the Indian army.
