MCD to raise awareness about ban

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun has collaborated with various groups of concerned citizens to raise public awareness on different aspects of the ban on polythene and polystyrene (thermocol) disposables.

Saumya Prasad of Nature Science Initiative, actively assisting the drive said, “We are coming up with new ideas for raising awareness. Our members have been preparing posters and content for some time now to raise public awarness especially among the customers.

Also, a Press conference will be addressed by the district magistrate in the coming days in which the publicity material will be released.”

Regarding the use of polythene bags in rainy season she said, "People use plastic bags in the rainy season to protect materials which is wrong. In monsoon, perishable products like fruits and vegetables kept in polythene decay faster while also affecting the nutritional content.

Using cloth bags on the other hand will make such products last longer. Also, plastic comprises about 42 per cent of litter in the city. The use of plastic should stop as all the plastic materials present in the market are not that essential.”
