The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is going to conduct a rally on Saturday to raise public awareness about their ongoing campaign against polythene and single use plastic. Municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said that the rally will comprise of almost every member of MCD, the estimated number of people expected to participate in this rally is about 1,500.
He further said, “The motive is to encourage people so that they start avoiding the use polythene voluntarily. This might not happen in a day, but it is a start. In our 10 days campaign of polythene donation drive in all 100 wards, we have had about 55,000 signed oath and feedback letters. Friday was the last date of the campaign after which we will be able to give exact number of these letters.”
When asked about their ongoing step of displaying stickers on shops he said, “We earlier spoke with the local merchant organisation to display stickers through which a message can be conveyed to the customers for saying no to polythene carry bags, but we did not receive as enthusiastic support from them. Now, we ourselves have started to display them, they are not fine with us displaying it in their shops.
There are about 10,000 shops in the MCD area. Our aim is to display these stickers everywhere. As of now, nearly 250 shops have been covered.”
It is also pertinent to mention here that MCD is planning to distribute at least one cloth bag in every household under the MCD area. According to municipal commissioner Pandey, the bags will be distributed from September 25 onward.
