The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will give 15-days time to the remaining locals to submit the property tax after the lockdown, informed municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey.
According to him, the rebate granted on the property tax will be applicable this time too but only for those who failed to submit the tax for the financial year 2019-20 by March.
The property tax is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the municipal corporation. As informed by the municipal commissioner, MCD has collected about Rs 44 crore as the property tax from residential as well as non-residential property owners of the city. According to the officials, the biggest part of this amount was received from the non-residential taxpayers. Initially, the MCD set the goal of collecting Rs 50 crore and the officials were optimistic that it could be achieved by the end of the March.
But due to the lockdown following the novel coronavirus scare, MCD had to shut down the tax section which influenced the tax collection. Talking about the property tax collection, Pandey said that the tax section was closed since the mid of March, therefore, the corporation will give 15 days to the locals to submit the property tax after the lockdown.
The taxpayers can deposit the tax during these days with the rebate of 20 per cent, said Pandey. As previously informed by Pandey, property tax amounting to Rs 8 crore is pending from the government bodies.
On being asked about the approach of MCD to recover the property tax on government buildings, Pandey said that the corporation will work towards this matter after the lockdown ends. He also informed that the corporation has collected about Rs 44 crore as property tax so far and any amount submitted after March will be included in the financial year 2020-21.
