The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) achieved the target of collecting Rs 25 crore in property tax on the last day of collection on Sunday. Officials in the MCD set a target of Rs 25 crore for the last financial year which was Rs 18 crore the year before that. The office collection and service charges by Forest Research Institute (FRI) which was Rs 2.15 crore helped MCD to reach the target on time — March 31.

Talking to this correspondent, the MCD official in charge said, “On the last day of tax collection about 40 to 50 tax payers reached MCD office and submitted their pending house tax. The FRI paid a pending service charge of Rs 2.15 crore which helped us in meeting the target on time.”

It is pertinent to mention here that among the central/autonomous institutes in Dehradun, the FRI paid service charges due to the MCD while the other institutes have not yet done so. According to the municipal officials, notices have been issued to all the named government offices and institutes. “It is very likely that the other institutes will pay their pending service charges in the coming days,” the official in-charge added.

It should be mentioned here that property tax is one of the major sources of revenue for the MCD. In order to enhance its revenue income, the mayor Sunil Uniyal 'Gama' had stressed on meeting the Rs 25 crore target on time.
