MCD, DVWM indulge in blame game

Published on:

The blame game between the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and the Doon Valley Waste Management (DVWM) company is proving detrimental to the city.

Both the MCD officials and the company officials have started putting blame on each other for the irregularities in sanitation works in the city.As per the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari, Ashok Kumar, DVWM has completely failed to perform the allotted task of garbage disposal. Due to the irregular lifting and disposal of the municipal waste by the employees of the company, the sanitation work of the city is also hampered, he stated.

Kumar maintained that DVWM was started under the Public Private Partnership mode two years back to improve the sanitation work in the State capital. Blaming the company for all the existing irregularities, he said that the employees of the company seem to be least interested in the given task of maintaining the sanitation

in Dehradun. When asked about the payment due to the company by the municipal corporation, Kumar replied that there is no such due payment. The corporation has already provided the company around Rs 2.50 crore of funds till date. He added that on the consistent demands of the company, MCD has also handed over the sanitation responsibility of all 60 wards of the city to it. But the garbage is still not picked up on regular basis from most of the wards of the city.

He added that MCD has also formed a committee to review the works of the company. He questioned why the MCD will pay the company when it is not executing its task properly and on time. Meanwhile, sanitation supervisors of many wards also complained that the company is even not able to look after the maintenance of its vehicles and has even not appointed permanent drivers for the DVWM vehicles. BJP councillor, Bhupendra Kathait maintained that DVWM doesn’t seem to be capable enough in holding the responsibility of all the wards.

He added that councillors are also planning to take away the responsibility of 30 wards from the company. As per President of State Sanitation Workers Commission, Bhagwat Prasad Makwana, the company has failed to fulfill the basic requirements of its employees. They are paid very less wages, which is around Rs 4,000 per month. Meanwhile, the company's workers are regularly demanding the company to fix their pay at Rs 235 per day.

They also complained that the workers have not been insured and are also not paid any EPF.The company on the other hand states that delayed payments by the MCD are responsible for the irregularities in the garbage disposal work.
