In order to improve the sanitation system of the city, mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ flagged off the door to door garbage collection service on Wednesday. Thirty five new vehicles along with 15 old vehicles are engaged in the service in 30 wards of the city. Further, the service would be extended to all the old 60 wards from March 31.
The newly acquired garbage trucks have separate segregation parts for degradable and non-biodegradable garbage waste which would help in keeping the garbage segregated. This can be stated as a step by MCD towards segregation if implemented successfully.
Elaborating further, Mohit Diwedi, the project head of the Chennai-based company entrusted with the task, said, “While the old garbage trucks were open the new ones have two parts which are for degradable and non-degradable waste. The workers appointed for the processing have been trained in separating the garbage collected from the houses. Besides, it is very important that the garbage is segregated from the source. This needs awareness among people for which certain steps would be taken by us.”
