The doctors of Max Super specialty hospital here have claimed to perform a complex face reconstructive surgery using skull bone of a young female cancer patient. Consultant Plastic Surgery and Reconstruction at Max Super Speciality Hospital Dr Vipin Barthwal informed that a young woman suffering from Maxillary bone cancer (Ewings Sarcoma) was admitted to the hospital last year.  He said surgical removal of the cancer would have involved face disfigurement of the patient. The doctors had to take a tough call on how to save the young girl’s face without compromising her life.
The cancerous bone was removed by the Onco-surgeon Dr Akash Narain Gaind after which the complex reconstructive surgery was performed. “The reconstruction was done using the bone from her skull. After 12 hours long surgery, we were able to reconstruct for young woman. In such cases role of anaesthesia team is very crucial as patients require anaesthesia for long duration,” said Dr Barthwal.
Senior Consultant and Onco Surgeon at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dehradun Dr Akash Narain Gaind said the facial bones were rarely involved by this tumour and just a few cases had been reported in the medical literature on Ewing Sarcoma of facial bone.He said the condition of the girl was critical as the tumour was very close to the eye ball. The doctors claim that the woman is now free from cancer and without disfigured face as is normally associated with such cases.
