The Max hospital here has launched Holmium laser technology for removal of kidney, gall bladder and urinary stones. This laser based technology is an energy efficient and minimally invasive technique for the treatment of obstructing urinary and kidney stones of any size.

Informing about technology Senior Consultant and head of Department of Urology, Max Super Hospital, Dr Daresh Doddamani, said that Holmium laser is a minimally invasive technique with a very powerful type of laser which is very efficient at fragmenting and pulverising (breaking down) urinary and kidney stones.

“A flexible laser fibre is inserted into a scope through the urethra to the stone located in the bladder, ureter or kidney. When the laser is activated, the laser beam breaks up the stone into sand like particles capable of being passed out through the natural urinary passage. It is widely considered as the most effective treatment for urinary/Kidney Stones,’’ he said.

Dr Doddamani further added that this procedure is typically performed when a patient is unable to pass a stone on his or her own and experiences discomfort and pain.

Consultant, Urology, Max Hospital, Dr Deepak Garg, Dehradun said, “A major advantage of the holmium laser over other types of procedures is its safety profile.  It is safe for patients with heart trouble or those on certain drugs like blood thinning medicines. It takes shorter recovery time than the other procedures.”

The Vice President Operations and Unit Head, Max Hospital, Dehradun, Dr Sandeep Singh Tanwar Uttarakhand said that the Holmium laser technology provides many benefits to patients, including immediate relief of symptoms like pain, excessive urination, frequent urination, persistent urge to urinate, or blood in urine and quick recovery. In most cases, patients can go home the same day. This technology works on all stone types and has greater than a 95 percent success rate with a single treatment, he added.
