Markets close as winners take out victory rallies

Following the declaration of the DAV (PG) College students’ union election result, the triumphant candidates and their supporters took out victory rallies outside the college on Saturday. The jubilant students were found dancing on drum beats. However, alert police stopped them at Survey Chowk.

Karanpur market was closed as the traders apprehended that the students would do excesses in a mood of triumphalism. Some petro pumps had their shutters down. They said that they chose to have the shutters down in apprehension of trouble let loose by the over-enthusiastic students.

Earlier, police had put barricades at various places on Karanpur Road and DAV (PG) College Road. Adequate police forces were deployed at barricades to stop the students from creating nuisance for others.

Meanwhile, as the counting progressed the moods of the students, including the candidates and their supporters, kept on changing fast.

When one candidate was found forging ahead of others his jubilant supporters were heard shouting to rejoice the lead.

However, they turned crest fallen if the candidate was found trailing behind others as the counting progressed.

“It was like a cliff hanger with things changing colours with time. I am an ABVP supporter.

I was downcast in the initial round of counting as the candidate I voted for the presidential post was trailing behind his main rival.  However, finally, things changed dramatically. The ABVP candidate emerged triumphant.

The margin does not matter. What matters is the drama, the excitement that we enjoyed for the first time,” said Rahul, student of BA –II year in DAV (PG) College.
