The conditions of roads across Uttarkashi district are turning worse with every passing day with heavy showers lashing it incessantly.
The rains have damaged about 20 metre stretch of Uttarkashi-lambgaon motor road, resulting in the vehicular movement from lambgaon to Srinagar being badly hit. With this, the villages Bees and Dhanari linked by this road in Bagagaddi region and most villages in Gajna region have been cut off from the Uttarkashi headquarters.
The year- old landslide zone involving Uttarkashi-lambgaon road seems to have become active again this year. The 20 metre stretch of the road- about 200 metre ahead of the Kuteti Devi temple-was found ravaged.
Even the stretch used for walking was not spared from the fury of the rains as it has become almost impassable. Dhanpur, Manpur, Kishanpur, Thalan, Aleth, Sherpur, Ginda, Kankrani, Kuroli in Badagaddi region bore the brunt of the protracted spells of torrential rains with the vehicular movement remaining stalled.
Compounding things further, the villages across Dunda, Dhanari, Chakon, Fold, Bamangaon and Gajna regions were blocked. The villagers are perforce taking detours –much longer in stretches-to reach the headquarters. Due to this, the supply of essential goods in these regions has become erratic, accentuating the ordeal for the people. The roads have become so damaged that any restoration of traffic would be possible only after a new ‘cutting’ is done in the 20 metre stretch.
The villagers’ predicament is all the more acute as there are no paths left for them to walk down to their destinations. In addition, this happens to be the alternative motor route from Uttarkashi to lambgaon to Shrinagar as well as for Kedarnath pilgrimage. Now, the vehicular movements for these places are also being affected.
