To mark the concluding anniversary of Kharakhet Salt Satyagraha held from April 20 to May 7, 1930, scores of people from Sarvoday Mandal Dehradun and other bodies gathered at Kharakhet on the weekend to remember the freedom fighters of that satyagraha. The Kharakhet Salt Satyagraha is unique in that it was possibly the only location in the country during the historic struggle where salt was prepared from river water - which itself makes this saline stretch of Noon river important and worth scientifically investigating. On the advice of Mahatma Gandhi, freedom fighters in Dehradun including Mahavir Tyagi, Nardev Dhastri, Hulas Verma and others visited the area in six batches from April 20 to May 7, 1930 to prepare and sell the salt (at the Town Hall), for which they were imprisoned for periods of up to six months.
